Making our House a Home: Part Two.

IMG_3850-2.jpg

As you would’ve discovered in Part One we purchased Drew’s family home in a private sale as our first house and as his parents were downsizing we also purchased most of their furniture second hand too. We wanted to personalise the house so it felt like ours, that way we wouldn’t feel like we just moved into someone else’s house. Rearranging the rooms was the first thing we did, and we have plans of things to change like the paint down the track but straight after buying a house those plans are quite out of reach for now. And I still have a stack of prints waiting to be framed so it will continue to change and morph as we go.

The biggest thing we’ve done though is use scents to change the house into one that feels more like ours. Now full disclaimer, you could easily do this on a budget by buying cheaper candles. One of my besties raves about the candles you can pick up at T. K. Maxx and Target has some yummy smelling ones. But I have always been in love with Glasshouse Candles and already had a massive collection of them before we moved in.

One of the first things I did when we unpacked was put scents in rooms that I believed they suited. Fresher scents went to bathrooms, light fun scents in open spaces and richer scents in bedrooms and the kitchen. The best thing about Glasshouse candles is the range of sizes that they offer and as most have a lid you can easily cluster different scents and just leave the lid on ones that you don’t want to smell at the same time as others.

Our Kitchen

Our Kitchen

In the kitchen I repurposed an old lolly jar I’d been using for jewellery storage into a Nespresso pod tower. It ended up looking super cute and is one of my favourite things in the kitchen now. I also got an old Grappa bottle off Mum that we finished a while ago and used it to make garlic infused olive oil which looks gorgeous thanks to the design of the bottle and the Italian labels.

The lounge room is probably the best combination of the two of us with some cool prints from Brisbane designer Jasmine Dowling on the wall and two old turbos Drew cleaned up from his work. We’ve kept the room pretty minimal as it also houses a bookshelf filled with my books, but everything comes together really nicely and shows our individual passions.

I’ll keep you up to date with big changes as we go both on here and over on my Instagram. But for now, we are all settled in and getting into a routine. I hope you have enjoyed this mini-series on our experiences buying and making our house a home! As I said in the first post feel free to ask me any questions you may have and I will answer all of them as best as I can.
